Learn to find your way with a map and compass. No phone, no signal, no problem.
From £65 per person
Phones are excellent right up until they are not. Batteries die quickly in the cold, screens are hard to use in the rain, and signal across the Dales is patchy at best. A map and compass never run out of charge.
Learning to navigate properly gives you the freedom to explore the hills with confidence, the ability to get yourself and others home safely if things go wrong, and something increasingly rare: a day spent looking at the landscape rather than a screen.
Our instructors served in the British Army and Royal Marines, where navigation is a core skill rather than a hobby. They teach the way they were taught: practical, patient and in the conditions you will actually meet.
Each level is a single six hour day: two hours in the classroom in Grassington covering the theory, followed by a four hour practical on the hills above the village, putting it all into practice.
You can take Level 1 on its own, go straight to Level 2 if you already have equivalent experience, or book both and save 25 percent.
We run courses for individuals, friends, families, clubs and companies, at any group size, always with low student to instructor ratios so everyone gets proper attention. Choose a date that suits you and we will arrange it with one of our instructors.

Ryan and his team made us feel very looked after during our day with Hike Yorkshire. I gained a lot of knowledge in navigation during the day and the guys were sharing valuable knowledge throughout the walk. Would definitely recommend!

It was so much more than just a hike. I learned practical map-reading skills, how to take and use coordinates, and gained a real insight into the nature, history and landscape of the area. The guide was knowledgeable, friendly and made the whole experience really enjoyable, with plenty of interesting facts and stories along the way. A brilliant mix of adventure, learning and enjoying the outdoors.
