A corporate group on a Hike Yorkshire team development day on Ilkley Moor

Corporate Team Building in Yorkshire

Outdoor development days led by British Army and Royal Marines veterans. No conference rooms, no flip charts, no trust falls.

What a conference room cannot teach you

Put a team in a meeting room and everybody performs the version of themselves they think is expected. Put the same team on open moorland with a map, a compass and a destination, and something more honest happens.

People find out who actually steps forward. Who listens. Who notices the person at the back struggling. Who makes a decision under pressure and who waits to be told.

That is not a metaphor for the workplace. It is the same set of behaviours in a setting that strips away the props.

We have been running these days for organisations across the UK, including a major medical company, and the feedback is consistent. People remember them. They talk about them months later. And they come back to work having learned something about each other that no away day agenda would have surfaced.

What we can build into your day

Every day is put together around what you actually want from it. These are the components we work with.

Navigation

Grid references, taking and following a bearing, and finding your position by resection. Taught properly, in the field, by instructors who navigated for a living.

Map reading

Reading contours, relating the map to the ground in front of you, and understanding terrain before you walk into it. The skill most people assume they have until they need it.

Leadership development

Rotating command. Every participant takes a turn leading the group, setting the route, managing pace and making the calls. Real decisions with real consequences, in front of the people they work with.

Problem solving

Tasks that cannot be completed alone and cannot be solved by one person thinking hardest. Communication under pressure, with a result at the end of it.

Fieldcraft

Movement, observation, ground appreciation and the memory drills used in military training. Genuinely engaging, and considerably harder than people expect.

Survival skills

Shelter, priorities of survival, and what actually keeps you alive when a day goes wrong. Practical rather than theatrical.

First aid

The principles that matter. Primary survey, recovery position, and what to do in the first five minutes of a serious incident. Skills people take home rather than forget on the drive back.

Foraging

Wild food identification with an emphasis on certainty rather than guesswork, including the dangerous lookalikes. Popular as a component of a longer day and available as a course in its own right.

Team building

Problem solving, communication under pressure and tasks that cannot be completed alone. Built around your objectives rather than pulled off a shelf.

The Moors Murder Mystery

This is the one people talk about afterwards.

Teams are set loose on the moors with a mystery to solve. Each team has an instructor, a map, and a set of checkpoints to find. At every checkpoint there is a piece of information and a riddle to work through. The information only makes sense when combined with what the other checkpoints hold, and getting to them means navigating properly rather than guessing.

Think Cluedo, except the clues are spread across open moorland and you have to find them yourself.

How the day runs

Two Hike Yorkshire instructors orientating a group on the moor
  • Duration: Half day, full day, or multi-day where a programme needs it.

  • Group size: Minimum of ten participants. No maximum, but we run at no more than eight participants per instructor. Larger groups are split across multiple instructors rather than stretched across one. That ratio is not a marketing line. It is the number at which an instructor can still see everybody, respond to individuals and keep the quality up. We would rather turn work away than run a day badly.

  • Location: Across the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Coast. We will recommend ground that suits your objectives, your group and the time of year, or work with a location you already have in mind.

  • What we handle: Route planning, written risk assessments, all specialist equipment, instructor ratios and the decisions on the day about weather and ground conditions. You turn up with your team.

  • Weather: We run in most conditions and plan for it. Where weather makes a day genuinely unsafe we adapt the programme or reschedule. Your people being cold and slightly damp is part of it. Your people being at risk is not.

Pricing

Every day we run is built around what the organisation actually wants from it, so we quote each one individually.

The price depends on duration, location, the components you include and any specialist equipment required. Multi-day programmes and bespoke briefs are quoted separately.

Minimum group size is ten participants.

Why Hike Yorkshire

  • Veteran-led. Our instructors served in the British Army and Royal Marines. Navigation, first aid, fieldcraft and leading people in difficult conditions are not things we picked up on a weekend course.

  • Properly insured and assessed. We hold public liability insurance and produce a written risk assessment for every route and activity. Documentation is available for your health and safety team before the day.

  • First aid qualified. Every instructor, on every day, with a kit carried throughout.

  • Ratios we do not stretch. Eight participants per instructor, maximum.

  • We know this ground. Not a national operator running a template in a location we visited once. We walk these hills year round and we know which ground works in February and which does not.
